Using Nicorette

Of course, the whole reason to use Nicorette is to quit smoking. But you can use Nicorette flexibly to help create a quit plan that works for you. Once you’ve made the decision to quit, you should start using Nicorette, even if you aren’t immediately able to stop smoking completely. The FDA has said that there are no significant safety concerns associated with using products like Nicorette with cigarettes. Substituting Nicorette for some, most or all of your cigarettes starts to lower the level of nicotine in your system.

We recommend you choose a start date for your quit and beginning using Nicorette that day, even if you are unable to immediately stop smoking completely. The important thing is that you are committed to your quit and set your plan for how you will eventually stop smoking completely.

If you have one or two cigarettes during your quit, there’s no reason to fear and it doesn’t need to be the end of your quit. You can — and should — keep using Nicorette so that you can get your quit back on track. 1, 2

You should use Nicorette for a full 12 weeks to improve your chances of success. However, if you find that you need to use Nicorette longer than 12 weeks, you can. The FDA agrees that it’s safe to continue using Nicorette beyond the suggested timeframe on the box.3 Talk to your health care provider so he or she is aware that you are continuing to use Nicorette.

Eating or drinking even mildly acidic foods and beverages directly before using or while using Nicorette inhibits nicotine absorption into your bloodstream. A basic alkaline pH is required for the nicotine in Nicorette to be properly released from the gum and absorbed through the lining of your mouth. We recommend waiting 15 minutes after eating or drinking before using Nicorette.

Going it alone, or trying to quit cold turkey, means relying solely on your willpower to quit. Of course, willpower is essential to quitting — you have to really want it. However, nicotine is so addictive that people often underestimate how difficult it is to resist cravings using willpower alone. Nicorette delivers a controlled amount of nicotine to your system to soothe your physical cravings and allow you to focus on mental aspects of your quit, which helps Double Your Chances of Quitting.™*

Nicorette gum is sugar-free and made to be less sticky than some gums. However, it may stick to dentures, dental caps or partial bridges. Consult your dentist or consider using the Nicorette Lozenge or mini Lozenge instead.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, only use Nicorette on the advice of your health care provider. Smoking can seriously harm your child. Try to stop smoking without using any nicotine replacement medicine. Nicorette is believed to be safer than smoking. However, the risks to your child from this medicine are not fully known.

Talk to your doctor before using Nicorette if you have any of the following:

  • a sodium-restricted diet
  • heart disease, recent heart attack or irregular heartbeat
  • high blood pressure not controlled with medication
  • stomach ulcer
  • diabetes

Talk to your doctor if you take other medications. Nicorette releases nicotine, which is already in your system if you are a smoker. However, withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking and the absence of smoke in your lungs may affect how your body handles medications. Talk to your doctor about this, especially if you take prescription drugs for asthma or depression.

You can safely drink in moderation. However, you should not eat or drink anything for 15 minutes before using Nicorette. Eating or drinking 15 minutes before using Nicorette may limit the absorption of Nicorette through the membrane of your mouth. To reduce the risk of a smoking relapse, you may want to avoid drinking alcohol if you associate it with smoking.
